Celebrate Urban Birds

Our friends at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology passed along this info on their terrific urban birds celebration:

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology invites city residents (from small towns, suburbs, and major cities) to "Celebrate Urban Birds!”

Watch birds for ten minutes in urban green spaces: balconies with potted plants, community gardens, tree-lined streets or large urban parks. Check off 15 target species of birds and send us the information through the mail or the Internet.

Poster available frm Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

"Celebrate Urban Birds!" will help scientists learn how birds use urban habitats and green spaces. The event will also raise awareness about birds in the city through activities such as gardening, bird watching, art, and science. People of all ages, backgrounds, and birding abilities can participate on their own or with local organizations.

Learn more at www.urbanbirds.org/celebration. Exciting Celebration Kits are available. They include a colorful urban birds poster, silhouette poster with “cool facts”, educational materials about birds and urban greening, data forms, and sunflower seed packets for planting in pots and gardens.

Urban birding is an extremely interesting topic; not only does it provide a path to nature for both kids and adults, but there are interesting behaviors and adaptations happening with urban birds. There's fundamental ecology to learn in these settings and the urban naturalist could make some pretty interesting discoveries.
