Last Grownup in the Woods: Lessons From MAKE
I'm here in Ithaca to attend the Citizen Science Toolkit Conference hosted by the venerable Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In just a couple of hours, I'll be heading over to the lab and getting a chance to visit Sapsucker Woods for the first time. I'm really excited!
As part of the conference, I'm presenting a poster, Last Grownup in the Woods: Lessons from MAKE:
Citizen science provides a conduit for adults to reconnect to nature and deepen their understanding of the realities of the messy world of science. At MAKE magazine, we found that people are hungry to for hands-on projects that express their love of technology, skills, and independent spirit. Learn about the Do-it-yourself (DIY) attitude behind MAKE magazine, and how we strive to engage a broad community of makers. What can we use to foster the community of similarly-minded citizen scientists?
You can download a PDF letter-sized version of the poster by clicking on this image:
I'd like to thank Allen Fish, director of Golden Gate Raptor Observatory; Dale Dougherty, my boss and publisher of MAKE; and Phil Torrone, MAKE blogger extraordinaire for their inspiration and help in developing the poster.
Here are the links and resources mentioned on the poster or related to its content:
- MAKE Magazine, including the Makezine Blog and Maker Faire.
- Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv
- How children lost the right to roam in four generations - very much related to Louv's book.
- Design as Play by Ulla-Maaria Mutanen.
- Brain death by dull cubicle by Kathy Sierra.
- Maker's Manifesto by Mister Jalopy.
- Crafter's Manifesto by Ulla-Maaria Mutanen.
- Charles Leadbeater: The rise of the amateur professional (video; TED Talks)
- Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming (began listening to this as an audio book on the flight here...it's amazing and necessary reading for anyone involved with environmental or social justic groups).
- The photo used on the poster of "Kinetic Pastry Science Mobile Muffins" was taken at Bay Area Maker Faire 2007 by Jared Zimmerman
I'll try to post interesting notes and news during the conference...stay tuned!
